Greater Cleveland Sports Awards

The Greater Cleveland Sports Awards were last night at the Cleveland Renaissance Hotel.  Athlete of the Year went to Browns receiver Josh Cribbs, despite the fact he had, in my opinion, the worst season of his career.  He was up against Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas and Indians outfielder Shin Soo Choo.  Joe Thomas, despite being named to the pro bowl, also had what in my opinion was the worst season of his professional career.  This season I watched Linebackers bust through the right side of our offensive line and break the ankles of three of our Quarterbacks this season.  In my opinion, Shin Soo Choo was most deserving of the honor.  He batted .300, hit 22 homers, and stole 22 bases and won the Asian Championship for South Korea.  Choo definitely got hosed.  I am happy that the Akron Men's Soccer team collectively won College Athlete of the year.  They were up against University of Iowa QB Ricky Stanzie, who played High School Ball at Lake Catholic in Mentor, and Dantell Lavander who plays for the Ohio State Buckeye's women's team.  Missing in the nominees for this award in my opinion was David Lightey, the Ohio State Buckeye who played his high school basketball at Villa Angela Saint Joseph High School.  I however am a fan of the Akron Men's Soccer team receiving the award after winning Akron's first National Championship, and actually bringing a Championship to Northeast Ohio.  Seven players off of that team were drafted in the MLS draft, five of them in the first round.  There are only eight picks per round, so congratulations all around to the Akron Men's Soccer team.
